Sport at St Joseph's

St Joseph ’s footballers get season off to a flyer!

On Wednesday 3rd October, St Joseph ’s football team played their first match of the new season away at Reigate Priory who had somehow managed to squeeze a pitch in between the building works in Priory Park . St Joseph ’s got off to a terrible start, conceding a goal in the 2nd minute as they were unable to adjust to playing on very long grass. However, the boys overcame this difficult start and equalised late in the first half when Niall Dowds drilled a left-footed shot in via the post.

St Joseph ’s had the better of the second half but looked like being denied victory as they hit the crossbar twice and the post in the space of 5 minutes. With just 4 minutes to go Scott Hiley chested the ball down and calmly slotted the ball past the Priory goalkeeper to make it 2-1. As Priory searched for a late equaliser, Michael Clapp put Scott clear of the defence and he confidently finished the opportunity, making the final score 3-1 to St Joseph ’s. The next match is at home to Furzefield on Friday 12th October and spectators are more than welcome to come and support the boys. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch this match.

Team: Sam Woods, Alex Gerhold, Kieran Jackson, Michael Clapp, Charlie Bird, Brendan Taylor, Scott Hiley, Jordan Hogan, Joe Connolly, Rory Crouch, Niall Dowds.

Cross-Country Success for St Joseph’s Boys

On Thursday 1st November St Joseph ’s competed in a cross-country fixture at Brambletye. This was the first opportunity for the children to wear our new athletics kit, purchased with Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers. The first race was for Girls in year 5 and 6 and Kayleigh Bruno was our only competitor. She ran an excellent race and finished in 15th place.

The second race was for Year 5 and 6 Boys and we had 16 athletes in this race. There were several excellent performances from the boys with Charlie Bird finishing 3rd; Niall Dowds 4th; Tom Fairbanks 6th; Brendan Taylor 8th and Jonathan Stearn finishing in 9th place and being the first Year 5 boy to cross the line. The team race was decided by adding together the finishing places of the first 4 boys from each school and St Joseph ’s emerged victorious with a total of 21 points, 3 points ahead of their closest challengers.

The final race was for Year 3 & 4 Boy’s and Girl’s in which we had 9 competitors. Daniel Farmer finished 8th, Joseph Larraz 10th and Zak Ogilvie 11th which were fantastic performances for Year 3 boys competing against Year 4 children.

All the athletes represented the school with great enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Cross-country club will continue on Friday lunchtimes for Years 3-6 and there will be 4 more fixtures after Christmas. The team particularly needs more girl’s from years 5 and 6, as well as boys and girls from Year 4. If your child enjoys running then please encourage them to come along.

St Joseph’s 14  St John’s 1

On Friday 9th November St Joseph ’s defeated St John’s in a one-sided match. The ‘A’ team performed well in the first half with goals from Scott (3), Niall, Kieran, Michael and Brendan giving them a 7-0 lead. Just before half-time, St John’s scored a well deserved consolation goal to leave the score 7-1 at half-time.

The entire team was substituted at half-time with the ‘B’ team given the challenge of beating the ‘A’ team’s score. They won the second half 7-0 with goals from Rory, Joe, Charlie (2) and a hat-trick from Tom Fairbanks making the final score 14-1. Much credit must go to St John’s for their continued effort and excellent manners.

David Beckham Academy Trip

On Tuesday 13th November, 18 Year 6 footballers were fortunate enough to have a coaching session at the David Beckham Football Academy in Greenwich . After seeing huge amounts of football memorabilia in the Gallery (including Zinedine Zidane’s boots and David Beckham’s world cup shirts), the boys then took part in a fantastic coaching session with a highly qualified coach on the indoor pitch. The boys showed what fantastic players they are all becoming and learned a huge amount from this experience, as did Mr Barham and Mr Jowett! Many thanks go to the parents and governors who joined us on this trip to make the experience even more enjoyable.

St Joseph’s 2 Wray Common 0

On Wednesday, the footballers took on a strong Wray Common side with the memories of yesterday’s trip to the Beckham Academy fresh in their minds. They played fantastic football to put in their best display of the season. A wonderful 4-man passing move ended up with Brendan coolly finishing to put St Joe’s 1-0 up at half-time. In the second half, Scott Hiley launched a powerful shot majestically in to the top corner to double our advantage and secure the three points. Every team member performed very well, but special praise must go to Alex Gerhold and Joe Connolly who put in outstanding perfor4mances in defence. The team are unbeaten and well placed in the league which resumes after Christmas.

Team: Sam Woods, Alex Gerhold , Joe Connolly, Christian Crawford, Brendan Taylor, Niall Dowds, Scott Hiley, Tom Fairbanks, Michael Clapp, Kieran Jackson.

Netball:

St Joseph ’s played their first friendly match of the year and performed excellently against a very well-organised Wray Common team. The final score was 9-4 to Wray Common.

Team: Claire Dunn, Emma Tatnell, Sarah Allen, Maddy Sheppard, Ellen O’ Dwyer, Monica Hill, Chiara Zuccarello, Victoria Brown, Jennifer Cestari, Megan Leigh, Rebecca Marks, Anna Porto, Maddy Walker
